TRACKING FLY BALLS

Tracking fly balls
Footwork, efficient body mechanics:
outfielders shutdown extra base hits

A lot of focus on defense in softball concentrates on the infield, where a batted ball through the infield is a base hit.

However, a ball past an outfielder almost always means EXTRA bases. An outfielder's tracking and throwing skills often decide the outcome of the game!

Wolverine outfielders: left-to-right, sophomore #42 1B/OF Devin Mackay
(Bangor, PA), junior #8 OF Steph Caracozza (Melbourne Beach, FL),
junior #2 OF Sarah Saunders (Wayne, NJ)

In the video below, produced by iSport, the mechanics of catching a fly ball is comprehensively reviewed. It is quite detailed; quickly summarized, the video recommends when running down a ball in the outfield: ► always drop step ► tuck glove when running ► TO CHANGE DIRECTION: ■ open shoulders to ball ■ tuck chin and turn.
