SOFTBALL & MASCOTS

Softball players as raving fans
Wally Wolverine, blue phantom
cheer at Wesley's sporting events

College sports is all about winning, rankings, stats, sweat, yada, yada, yada. All worthy goals. It's also just as much about camaraderie, team bonding, school spirit, and support for one another.

Casey is ready to slug for the team,
whether in the batter's box or
playfully as Wally the Wolverine!
The Wesley Wolverine softball team delivers on every count. In this off season, you will find these Wolverines, temporarily loose now from the diamond, as avid fans at many different venues – often with players from other teams – cheering on their fellow athletes at Wesley College sporting and academic events.

This past weekend it was never more evident than who suited up as Wally the Wolverine, Wesley's grinning mascot, while, separately, a strange “(Navy) Blue Phantom” (for lack of a better description) draped in school colors made a startling appearance, too.

Now Wesley certainly has something more than to just cheer about on the gridiron. The football team is undefeated and currently ranked #4 in the country.

Casey throws from outfield and
limbers up as Wally the Wolverine!
On Saturday, while many softball players sat between the goalposts as fans at the Scott D. Miller Stadium, there was one softball Wolverine who became a very active part of the game!

Softball sophomore #19 OF Casey Beall (Severn, MD) made her inaugural appearance as Wally the Wolverine himself! She was there dressed as the Wesley mascot to root on the Wolverines to their ninth consecutive victory. She also posed before endless cameras with and for visiting fans and families. Casey herself went unseen and unsung, of course, hidden behind Wally's bushy snout, eyebrows, sideburns, and that winsome “devilish smile”!

Meanwhile, across campus, it was “Senior Day” for the Wolverine volleyball team, who played their last match of the season. In the stands were several softball players – e.g., junior #8 OF Steph Caracozza (Melbourne Beach, FL), junior #6 MI Breanna Hartman (Red Bank, NJ), junior #22 C/UT Morgan Seymour (Smyrna, DE) and junior #25 1B Samantha Mahoski (Schenectady, NY) among those spotted.

There was also the aforementioned mysterious – never seen before! -- Blue Phantom who stood out like a beacon shining encouragement from the stands! Who was that masked creature with the spiked mop of blonde hair and (not shown in photo) an extended blow horn? Turns out, it was none other than softball sophomore #18 C/3B Nina Marcano (Middletown, DE).

The volleyball team also won its contest in three straight sets!

It's: Go Wolverines! That's the softball first and foremost motto, whether as players themselves, raving fans or wearing school fur and colors!
