Here are a few lines pulled from Bill Plummer III's article titled “COLLEGE SOFTBALL POPULARITY INCREASING” at the College Sports Madness website.

“Division III has the most number of schools/colleges sponsoring a women's (softball) program with 399 and 7,047 total participants and an average team size of 18.
