BALL GIRLS

Working a second sport
Softball players double as ball girls
during Wolverine volleyball match

Attend a Wesley Wolverine volleyball game and it's a good chance you will find a block of seats occupied by the softball team cheering on their sister Wolverines.

It played out differently yesterday.

The softball team was on the court! – not as players, but as ball girls, whose job is to keep the flow of the game going by transferring balls from one end of the court to the other.

Ball girls are shagging volleyballs during warmups, then taking charge of game balls during the match. It is not as easy as it sounds. It is serious business. The game volleyballs must move around the gym as quickly and efficiently as possible without causing distraction to players, referees or fans.

As a spectator, junior softball player #8
OF Steph Caracozza (Melbourne Beach, FL)
showed up in Wolverine war paint
to support the volleyball team.
The softball trio handling the ball girl's responsibilities were junior #6 MI Breanna Hartman (Red Bank, NJ), junior #25 1B Samantha Mahoski (Schenectady, NY), and sophomore #18 C/3B Nina Marcano (Middletown, DE).

The ball girl's work is certainly not the same as fielding a hard hit softball or grooving a 60 MPH curve ball to the outfield, but it still requires focus and attention. These three were up to the task.
