Juniata, a tough competitor for
Wesley Wolverines on weekend

The Juniata Eagles (8-12) will be in town this Sunday, April 26, to take on the Wesley Wolverines (21-12) at 1:00 & 3:00 PM at the Reynolds DuPont softball field, 511 Mary Street, Dover, DE.
 
Despite a difference in win/loss records, the games are shaping up to be competitive contests between two teams that appear fairly evenly matched when comparing performances against a common opponent.

Juniata, just yesterday, April 21, split an away doubleheader in Middletown, PA, played against Capitol Athletic Conference (CAC) member, the Penn State Harrisburg Lions.

The Eagles dropped the first game 9-3, but rallied in the nightcap by scoring 10 runs in the last three innings to grab an 11-8 victory over the Lions.

The Wolverines tried the same come-from-behind trick against Penn State Harrisburg on the Lions' home field last March 30th by driving home 5 runs in the last two innings, but fell short in a 7-6 loss before dropping the second game 6-3.

ECAC TOURNEY SELECTION

ECAC Championship tourney
 
Selection to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship tournament, May 6 – 10, is getting more competitive.

Eight squads will be selected from a list of “declared” teams, which stood at just 9 colleges late last week.

Now a half dozen more teams have declared their interest. The NEW colleges seeking selection are: ■ Geneva College ■ Muhlenberg College ■ Bethany College ■ Grove City College ■ Penn State Behrend ■ Cabrini College.

That raises the total to 15 teams – again, only 8 will make the cut – including the earlier schools to declare: ■ Wesley College, ■ Penn State Harrisburg, ■ Geneva College, ■ McDaniel College, ■ Albright College, ■ Arcadia University, ■ Stevenson University, ■ Neumann University, and ■ Wilson College.

More colleges may join the list. The final date to seek consideration for selection to the tournament is this Friday, April 24.

Criteria used to pick the eight chosen teams will be based on a 6-point analysis of the declared team's record and strength of schedule. Click here to read the blog entry about the selection process.

#‎MotivationMonday‬ Lauren Rae is a 12-year-old with Guillian-Barre Syndrome. After long months of speech and occupational therapy and watching softball from the sidelines her family began looking for other ways to help overcome physical deficits. Lauren began to make a slow transition back to softball, starting lessons with Nicole Thomas and later transitioning to Shelly Farris, both Tincher Pitching Certified Instructors. STANDFORD VS OREGON

They lose, but make their presence felt!

The Stanford Cardinals gave the top ranked (NFCA now #3) Oregon Ducks “all they could handle” this weekend as Stanford battled to a 5-4 loss on Saturday and dropped Sunday's game 12-8 against Oregon, while recording 15 hits and 2 home runs (one a grand slam) along the way!

However, the Juniata College Eagles will take on our Wesley Wolverines in a doubleheader, Sunday, April 26, at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM on the Reynolds DuPont softball field, 511 Mary Street, Dover, DE

Wesley Wolverine 2015 MVP Award

To a startled batter, she's that girl at 2B with the flaming scarlet eyes – or red contacts, that is.

For the Wesley Wolverines, she is this year's softball MVP Award winner! That's “Most Valuable – Player” and, frankly, all-around invaluable “Person”.

She is junior #6 MI Breanna Hartman (Red Bank, NJ).

that unfortunately photograph a much darker color.

Besides those crimson eyes staring out from the field, Bre stood out in so many talented ways this season.

If the team needs a key hit? Tap Bre for her trademark line drive deep to the outfield.

If the coach needs flawless fielding? Call on Bre, the only conference middle infielder to play every game, in or out of conference, without an error.

If a fellow player needs morale boost after a tough inning? You will find co-captain Bre offering words of encouragement with her arm around her teammate.

No matter the situation, count on Bre.

Congratulations Breanna Hartman, the very well-deserved recipient of the 2015 Wolverine MVP Award!

LATE SCHEDULE?

Wolverines may still play
late schedule this 2015 season

The Wesley Wolverines MAY still be playing softball this season. 

The tentative, not yet confirmed dates, but becoming increasingly likely, are the weekend of April 25 & 26 and an unrelated “championship” tournament set for May 6, 9, & 10.

NEXT WEEKEND?

First up might be games against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs AND/OR the Juniata College Eagles next weekend, April 25 & 26. 

The possible schedule is being worked out now. Stay tuned for more information.

EARLY MAY?

Then, there's the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship tournament held May 6, May 9, and May 10.

The Wolverines are currently one of nine “declared” teams of which eight will be chosen to participate in the three day competition. Colleges have until Friday, April 24 to declare their interest, so the list of nine applying to play may grow to a larger number.

At this time, universities and colleges under consideration are: ■ Wesley College, ■ Penn State Harrisburg, ■ Geneva College, ■ McDaniel College, ■ Albright College, ■ Arcadia University, ■ Stevenson University, ■ Neumann University, and ■ Wilson College.

The eventual eight clubs taking the field will be decided by an ECAC selection committee who promises to announce the tournament teams on Monday, May 4.

There are four primary criteria applied to pick the eight participants. These are (1) winning percentage, (2) strength of schedule and (3) head–to-head results against other teams in the pool as well as (4) against common opponents during the season. 

The secondary criteria used are (5) conference standings and (6) overall winning percentage.

Travel distance and costs also are considered. The ECAC admits some championship caliber teams may be left out.

The ECAC Championship games start Wednesday, May 6, at the campuses of the top-four seeds, assuming the top seeds can host. It is single elimination play in the first round with a double elimination tournament on Saturday, May 9, and Sunday, May 10, for teams that advance to the weekend play.
